Folk remedies are traditional healing practices passed down through generations—usually by word of mouth—using natural materials like plants, minerals, food, and simple techniques to support health and treat common ailments. They’re rooted in everyday experience rather than formal scientific study and often reflect the culture, environment, and beliefs of a community.

Today we will tackle heartburn. Heartburn is caused by excessive consumption of food or alcohol, fatty foods, and/or acidic foods. Pregnancy, aging and obesity tend to make heartburn worse.

Tips: sleep with your head slightly elevated, avoid tight clothing or belts, take walks daily to help relieve digestive problems, eat foods that combat acidity such as potatoes, carrots, and salads, and avoid foods high in fat, heavily spiced, or highly acidic such as tomatoes and oranges. Stop smoking. Reduce stress. Do not eat right before going to bed- wait three hours after your last meal to lie down.

Natural remedies:

Things to drink shortly after finishing a meal: 1/2 c papaya juice or 1/4 c water with 2T apple cider vinegar

Things to eat daily: plain yogurt (not Greek)

Make a tea of 2T ginger root and half cup of water. Boil for 10 minutes and drink before bed.
