Tucked high among the trees of Chandler Mountain in St. Clair County, Alabama, Creel Memorial Chapel—better known simply as Creel Chapel—is one of those special places where history, faith, and nature come together.
The chapel is part of Camp Sumatanga, a historic Christian camp and retreat center spread across approximately 1,700 acres along Chandler Mountain. Sumatanga was established with the idea of creating a place for renewal, reflection, and spiritual retreat.
Creel Chapel was built in 1964 and named in honor of Judge E. M. Creel. Unlike a traditional enclosed church, the chapel is an open-air structure surrounded by the forest. Native stone pillars support its high timber-and-metal roof, while stone steps lead toward an altar and cross overlooking the mountains.
Originally intended primarily as a place for individual prayer and meditation, the chapel has become known for its peaceful setting and breathtaking mountain views. Today, it is also a popular location for intimate weddings and other meaningful gatherings.
Perhaps the most memorable thing about Creel Chapel isn’t the structure itself, but what surrounds it. The quiet woods, mountain air, distant ridgelines, and open sky create a natural sense of stillness. Standing there, it is easy to understand why Sumatanga was envisioned as a place of renewal and reflection.
For those who love Alabama’s hidden places, Creel Chapel is a beautiful reminder that some of the state’s most meaningful landmarks aren’t grand buildings or elaborate monuments. Sometimes, they are simply a cross, a mountain, and a quiet place to pause.
