Compassionate support, faith-informed encouragement, and a path toward appropriate care in our Alabama communities.
When life becomes overwhelming, knowing where to turn can be one of the hardest parts of asking for help. You may be carrying grief, facing a difficult transition, feeling emotionally exhausted, struggling in your relationships, or simply trying to find your footing during an uncertain season.
Perhaps you have considered reaching out for help but aren’t sure what kind of support you need. Perhaps the cost of professional services feels out of reach. Or perhaps you would feel more comfortable beginning with someone who understands the importance of your Christian faith.
These are some of the reasons I am developing Rooted & Restored, an emerging initiative of Alabama Forest Healing Co.
My vision is to help make compassionate, faith-informed mental health coaching more accessible to our community while building connections with professionals and organizations that can help people find the right level of care.
But what exactly is Christian Mental Health Coaching? How is it different from counseling or therapy? And how might Rooted & Restored eventually serve our neighbors?
Let’s explore these questions together.
What Is Christian Mental Health Coaching?
Christian Mental Health Coaching is a form of non-clinical support that combines coaching principles with a Christian perspective on hope, purpose, personal growth, and spiritual well-being.
It offers individuals an opportunity to talk through challenges, identify personal strengths, establish meaningful goals, develop healthy coping habits, and consider practical steps toward a healthier daily life.
Depending on the coach’s training and scope of practice, conversations may address topics such as:
- Stress and overwhelm: Exploring practical ways to manage everyday pressures and create healthier routines.
- Grief and life transitions: Finding support while navigating loss, change, uncertainty, or a new chapter of life.
- Personal growth: Identifying goals, recognizing strengths, and building confidence in taking the next step.
- Healthy relationships: Exploring communication, boundaries, and ways to strengthen supportive connections.
- Faith and emotional well-being: Reflecting on spiritual resources, values, and sources of hope when appropriate and welcomed by the individual.
- Finding additional help: Identifying community resources and connecting with qualified professionals when needs extend beyond coaching.
Light University describes mental health coaching as a non-clinical, goal-oriented approach that can complement licensed mental health services.
At its heart, coaching is about walking alongside someone as they work toward positive change. It is not about having every answer or attempting to solve another person’s life. It is about listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, offering appropriate encouragement, and helping someone identify realistic next steps.
For those who desire it, Christian coaching can incorporate prayer, Scripture, and faith-based reflection in a respectful, supportive manner.
Faith and mental health support do not have to compete with one another. A person can draw strength from their relationship with God while also recognizing the value of practical tools, community support, and professional care.
What Christian Mental Health Coaching Is Not
Clarity matters when people are trusting someone with their personal struggles. I believe that providing support responsibly begins with being honest about what coaching can and cannot offer.
Coaching is not psychotherapy or clinical counseling
Licensed mental health professionals have specialized education, training, and authorization to provide services within their professional licenses. Depending on their qualifications, they may assess and diagnose mental health conditions, develop treatment plans, and provide psychotherapy.
A Christian Mental Health Coach does not assume those clinical responsibilities simply by completing coaching training.
Coaching is non-clinical support. It does not replace professional evaluation, psychotherapy, psychiatric care, or other treatment that a person may need.
Coaching is not a promise to cure mental health conditions
Mental health challenges can have complex causes, and there is no single solution that works for everyone.
A coach cannot promise to cure depression, eliminate anxiety disorders, resolve trauma, or replace medication or other prescribed treatment. Instead, coaching can help individuals identify appropriate goals, strengthen daily coping practices, and connect with additional support when needed.
Coaching is not a substitute for emergency care
A mental health crisis requires an appropriate response. Someone experiencing immediate danger, severe distress, or symptoms that require urgent clinical attention may need emergency services or a qualified mental health professional.
In the United States, people experiencing suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, or another mental health crisis can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911.
Coaching is not about replacing professional treatment with prayer alone
Prayer and Scripture can provide comfort and encouragement for people who welcome Christian support. However, struggling with a mental health condition is not evidence of weak faith or a failure to pray enough.
People can have a strong relationship with God and still need professional mental health treatment. They deserve compassion, understanding, and appropriate care without shame or judgment.
My hope is to encourage people spiritually while respecting the importance of qualified clinical treatment when it is needed.
Why Consider Christian Mental Health Coaching?
For some individuals, coaching may provide a more accessible starting point than traditional clinical services. Others may benefit from coaching alongside professional treatment or after completing a course of therapy, when additional non-clinical encouragement and accountability would be helpful.
A coach may help someone organize their thoughts, identify what feels most difficult, establish achievable goals, and consider available options.
Affordability is another important consideration.
The cost of mental health services can be a genuine obstacle for individuals and families. Rooted & Restored hopes to explore a no-to-low-cost model that could help make non-clinical support available to more people in our area.
The availability and cost of future services will depend on the program’s development, resources, and partnerships. I do not want to promise services before the appropriate arrangements are in place.
What I do want is to help create more opportunities for people to be heard, encouraged, and connected with the resources they need.
How Rooted & Restored Hopes to Serve Our Community
Rooted & Restored is being developed as part of Alabama Forest Healing Co., bringing together my interest in nature, my Christian faith, and my desire to help people find support during difficult seasons.
My vision includes several areas of potential service.
1. Accessible coaching and support
I hope to establish opportunities for individuals to receive non-clinical, faith-informed coaching at no or low cost, depending on available funding and resources.
2. Connections to professional care
I want to build a network of licensed counselors, therapists, physicians, social workers, churches, nonprofit organizations, and other community resources. When someone needs services beyond coaching, the goal will be to help them identify an appropriate next step.
3. Faith-informed encouragement
For people who desire Christian support, I hope to create a respectful environment where faith, personal reflection, encouragement, and practical goal-setting can be part of the conversation.
4. Community education and awareness
I hope to share information that helps people better understand mental health, recognize when someone may be struggling, and learn where to turn for assistance.
5. A community that supports rather than judges
Above all, I want Rooted & Restored to contribute to a culture in which people feel less alone when life becomes difficult. No one should feel ashamed to ask for help, and no one should be made to feel that their struggles make them less worthy of compassion.
These are developing goals, and I look forward to sharing more as the initiative takes shape.
How Will People Access Rooted & Restored Services?
At this stage, Rooted & Restored is still in development.
As the venture progresses, I plan to share updates through Alabama Forest Healing Co. and its online presence.
When services become available, I hope to provide clear information about:
- What services are offered and who may benefit from them.
- Whether appointments will be available in person, online, or through another format.
- Any eligibility requirements and applicable fees.
- How to inquire about services and schedule an initial conversation.
- What coaching can and cannot provide.
- How referrals to licensed providers and other community resources will work.
I also look forward to connecting with professionals and organizations interested in building a stronger network of support in our area.
If you are a licensed mental health professional, a pastor, a community leader, or someone involved in a local organization that serves individuals and families, I would welcome the opportunity to build connections as this vision develops.
My hope is that Rooted & Restored will become part of a broader community effort to make compassionate support easier to find.
A Final Word: You Don’t Have to Walk Alone
Sometimes, the first step toward a better season is not knowing exactly what to do. It is simply acknowledging that something is difficult and allowing yourself to seek support.
There is strength in asking questions. There is wisdom in recognizing when you need help. And there is hope in discovering that you do not have to navigate every challenge by yourself.
Through Rooted & Restored, I hope to help build connections that surround, support, and uplift those experiencing mental and emotional challenges. I want to be part of a community where people can find encouragement, learn about their options, and connect with the level of care that best meets their needs.
As this venture takes root, I invite you to follow along, share your thoughts, and help me build relationships with others who care deeply about the well-being of our community.
More information will be shared in the coming months as plans develop.
