Tucked away in the beautiful Bankhead National Forest near Double Springs, Alabama, Caney Creek Falls is one of North Alabama’s most enchanting natural treasures. Surrounded by moss-covered rocks, lush greenery, and towering trees, this picturesque waterfall cascades into a rocky canyon, creating a peaceful retreat for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers. The area is associated with the wild beauty of the Sipsey region, often called the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls.”

The hike to Caney Creek Falls is approximately 1.7 miles round trip, depending on the route taken. Visitors can enjoy the sounds of flowing water, explore the surrounding forest, and take in the beauty of the falls. However, the descent into the canyon can be steep and slippery, so sturdy hiking shoes and extra caution are recommended.

Parking and Supporting the Landowner

One important detail to know before visiting is that parking access has changed over the years. Visitors have commonly used a gravel road leading to a private residence associated with Mr. Tidwell, whose family has generously allowed hikers to park on their property and access the falls.

If parking at Mr. Tidwell’s home is still permitted when you visit, follow the posted signs and park only in the designated area. A donation mailbox has been provided so please consider leaving a cash donation as a thank-you for the landowner’s generosity in helping people enjoy this beautiful place. Your kindness helps recognize the time, property, and goodwill involved in providing access.

A Few Tips Before You Go

  • Wear sturdy shoes with good traction.
  • Bring drinking water, snacks, and a phone or GPS with offline maps.
  • Watch your footing near the falls, especially after rainfall.
  • Pack out all trash and leave the area as beautiful as you found it.

Caney Creek Falls is a wonderful reminder that some of Alabama’s most beautiful places are found off the beaten path. With a little preparation, respect for the land, and appreciation for those who make access possible, visitors can help preserve this special corner of the Bankhead forest for others to enjoy.
